The Teague Lions took the long road trip for the non-district finale and needed last minute heroics to win their first game of the season 48-47 over the Hempstead Bobcats Friday night.
The night featured a game with highlight plays from long distances in the shootout. Hempstead began the high scoring game when quarterback Tom McDade hit Kendalyn Wilson for 94-yard touchdown for the first score of the night and an early 7-0 lead.
The Lions matched the score with a Drew Satterwhite touchdown run to knot the score at 7-7. His 54-yard run weaved through the Bobcat defense and great line blocking sprung him for the score.
Teague put another long touchdown early in the game on Gelico Green 51-yard run. The short yardage set appeared to draw the defense to move and the hesitation was all Green needed to sprint up the middle for the score and again tie the score, this time 14-14.
The Bobcats scored a pair of touchdowns to potentially take control of the game. Marvin Lewis and McDade scored on runs from 57 and 65 yards to take a 28-14 lead. McDade had to work to elude a tackle from Satterwhite to score down the near sideline.
Satterwhite caught a pass down to the ten-yard line and then scored on the final ten yards to tie the score for the third time on the night at 28-28.
Both teams exchanged turnovers in the fourth quarter with the Bobcats leading 47-41. Freshman quarterback Jake Callahan led the Lions down the field for the game winner. He scrambled for a first down near midfield and then threw a perfect strike to Satterwhite for the go-ahead touchdown. Roberto Escobedo set the difference with the point after and the Lions led 48-47 and held on for their first win of the season.
Teague had a balanced attack in their 473-yard night and the more important win on the night. The Lions remain on the road to take on the defending state champion Grandview Zebras on Friday. Grandview defeated West 42-14 in their District 9-3A Division I opener to join Whitney and Maypearl on top of the district standings. Whitney defeated McGregor and Maypearl shut out the Groesbeck Goats 47-0.
