The Teague Lions left the field in Madisonville still searching for their first win. The Lions had a hard-fought road loss 24- 7 to the Mustangs Friday night.
Madisonville had a big play offense and that propelled them to the victory in a game full of penalties. The first touchdown of the game came from the Mustang return team. Jeramiah Burns returned a Teague punt to set up good field position and Roger Mosley ran the Mustang offense inside the Teague ten yard line. Following a penalty, Mustang quarterback Armando Juarez tossed a touchdown pass to Devin Wheaton for the first score of the game.
The Teague offense wasted little time getting the score back. Nemier Herod took the handoff and had a highlight reel touchdown run from 64 yards away to tie the score.
Madisonville put themselves in the lead with around two minutes remaining in the first half. The drive began on the Mustang 43-yard line and the Madisonville offense moved down close to the 20-yard line with less than a minute remaining. With 11 seconds remaining in the first half, Juarez threw his second touchdown pass of the game. Juarez tossed to the back of the end zone to Doug’kym Johnson and the teams went into the locker room with a 14-7 Mustang lead.
The Lions took the ball after the halftime break and drove inside Madisonville territory. Jake Callahan was picked off by Mosley inside the Madisonville 20-yard line stopping the deepest movement by the Lions for the remainder of the contest. The Mustang drive stalled, and the kicking team came on for a long field goal attempt. The field goal was no good, but a Lion penalty gave the Mustangs another shot, and the field goal split the uprights for the Mustang 17- 7 lead.
Teague suffered another interception at the end of the third quarter and the Mustangs would put a final touchdown on the board, this time with the legs of Juarez on a 36-yard touchdown run.
The Teague Lions will return to the road next Friday night with a game against unbeaten Buffalo. The Bison and Lions will battle in the final test for Buffalo before they begin district play.
