Lena Fay Canady Bonner, 94, of Fairfield, died Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at Fairfield Nursing & Rehabilitation in Fairfield. Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 22 at Capps Memorial Chapel with Mr. David Barnes officiating. Interment followed at Bonner Cemetery.
Lena was born October 30, 1926 in Teague, Texas to parents Andrew Joshua and Izetta Loraine Johnson Canady. She graduated as valedictorian of the 1944 class of Teague High School. After graduation she worked in downtown Teague at Bendy’s. She married Carl Yates (Pete) Bonner on June 4, 1949 in Streetman, Texas and he preceded her in death on November 26, 2011.
Lena was a past President of the Fairfield P.T.A. For many years she was active in the Freestone County Genealogical Society where she served as President and worked on publishing Freestone Frontiers. She also worked as an on-call resource for the genealogy room, assisting visitors in discovering their Freestone County connections.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters, Verina Daniell, Maurice Holder, Jackie Patton, El Norma Day Smitherman and Ocha Strong.
Her surviving family include daughters, Susan Kennard (Charles) and Carla Bonner; four grandchildren, Melody Pine (David), Jennifer Knecht (Dwayne), John Kennard (Tia) and Karen Boyd (Nat); four great-grandchildren, Reagan Knecht, Daniel Knecht, Jocelyn Knecht and Helen Kennard; two sisters, Alice Minchew and Carol Bowers.
