“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” is a popular saying.
This year, students of Fairfield Intermediate School plan to do just that – all while learning to make a profitable business.
Forty-two students, ranging from third to fifth grade, have signed on for the Lemonade Extravaganza with teacher Gina Martin.
These aspiring entrepreneurs will learn how to start, own, and operate their very own business.
“This year is a pilot program,” says Martin. “We are hoping to get a sponsor and go even bigger next year.”
A strategic lesson-based program, Lemonade Extravaganza will direct students from the dream to a business plan, while teaching them the skills to start any company.
The kids are encouraged to work hard and make a profit. They are also encouraged to spend some, save some and share some, by giving back to their community.
The idea was suggested by Brenda Pate, Executive Director for the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce. She had learned about the Lemonade Day program while attending a conference.
Teacher Gina Martin, a Chamber Board Member, decided to take on the project of bringing the program to Fairfield.
An official sponsor was not secured for their first year pilot, so Fairfield is not an official Lemonade Day city. According to Pate, a sponsorship for this particular program is typically several thousand dollars.
Students’ parents are paying for the backpack and workbook, themselves, for the pilot program. These are the same materials used by the Lemonade Day organization.
The Fairfield Chamber is also invested, as they will be purchasing prizes for the Lemonade Extravaganza participants.
Teacher Gina Martin is encouraged by the large number of students participating for their first event. “This will be great for the community and our youth, who are the next business owners in Fairfield,” she says.
