The Fairfield Lady Eagles took a pair of wins over the week and continue to lead the district 20-3A race in the early going of the new year. Fairfield has continued the streak of 20-win seasons with their 20th win over the Mexia Ladycats on Friday.
The Lady Eagles began the week at the Johnson Activity Center and a date with co-leader in the district Franklin. The Lady Lions jumped out to a quick lead, but the Lady Eagles found the lead and kept it throughout the game.
Franklin jumped out to a quick lead in the opening moments five of six straight scores. Breeley Lively and Karaline Smitherman paced the Lady Lion offense to a 10-8 lead and Fairfield reeled off the final 13 points of the period. Blayke Brackens had a three and steal and score to go along with Kaylee Williams leading the fast bread for a pair of buckets. Jimilyah Nash keyed the offense with a couple of passes for assists down the stretch and the Lady Eagles held a 21-10 lead at the end of the first period.
With a big lead, the Lady Eagles kept their regular rotation and only hit three of 13 in the period but connected on six of seven free throws and the Lady Lions cut six points off the halftime deficit. Smitherman and Naomi Retondo hit three pointers and Rekieta was fouled on a score and connected on her free throw and the Lady Eagles led 53-39 at the end of three.
Nash, Williams and Thaler each scored in the fourth period and the defensive pressure remained solid in the 64-45 win for the Lady Eagles. Thaler scored 18 points in the win. She connected on ten of 12 free throws.
Nash began her night with 14 points in the first period to decide the game in Mexia early. She led the break with assist passes from Brackens and her seven steals in the first quarter of her total of 11 on the night, all in the first half.
With the double-digit lead, Thaler paced the Lady Eagle offense with nine of her 21 points in the second period and the Lady Eagles built a big first half lead.
Jaci Abram and Thaler, along with Nash continued to build on the halftime lead. Addison Posey scored five points in the final period to set the final score of 72-40.
Nash scored 19 on the night and Thaler matched her total with 19 points and six steals. Haylee Fitch led the Ladycats with 11 points.
