Friday, July 27th was the 65th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended the hostilities of the Korean War.
Twelve veterans of that war from the East Texas area were honored during a luncheon commemorating their service.
The luncheon is an annual project of the Palestine chapters of the Associates of the Vietnam Veterans of America (AVVA), Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA), and Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
This year the VVA and AVVA Dogwood Chapter 991 hosted the event, which was held in the DAV/VVA Hall on Gardner Drive in Palestine. The veterans came from Palestine, Elkhart, Buffalo, and Fairfield.
After the opening ceremonies, they were treated to a meal of Salisbury Steak, salad, vegetables, and deserts which was prepared by the AVVA.
The event’s guest speaker was former Palestine City Councilman, and former Deputy Commander of the East Texas Patriot Guard Riders, Mr. Doug Smith. Ms. Donita Wiggins and Ms. Jamie Fizer from Kindred Hospice and Home Health Care honored each individual veteran with a Certificate of Appreciation and a lapel pin. AVVA member Sherry Hester provided a special medley of official songs of all of our military branches.
The AVVA and Kindred Hospice were assisted throughout the event by Girl Scouts from Troop 7054.
