The Jonathan Hardin Chapter, NSDAR, met September 13, 2017 at the Gibbs Memorial Library in Mexia, Texas. Regent Aleece McBay introduced guest Susan Johnston, Madeline Lively, Glenda Buck, and welcomed all members to our meeting.
State Chaplain, Kay Alston informed members about the Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts sponsored by Texas Daughters of the American Revolution. Gift card donations will be accepted for Veterans, Texas Classrooms, and Texas Daughters affected by the flood and storms produced by Hurricane Harvey.
Kay Alston, Co-Chairman of Constitution Week noted that it will be observed during the week of September 17-23. Daughters began the observance in 1955 when they petitioned the US congress to dedicate this week each year to commemorate the events that led to the framing of the Constitution.
New member Glenda Diane Stark Buck of Teague was inducted into the chapter by Chaplain Ann Bonner Gokey, this brings our chapter membership to 180. We are always excited to welcome new members.
Susan Johnston, TXDAR American Heritage Committee Chairman, from the Fort Graham Chapter, gave the program on “Exploring America Through the Arts”. Mrs. Johnston gave a wonderful program telling about the contest and the divisions in each category.
This committee was established to preserve our rich American heritage in the fields of arts, sculpture, crafts, drama, literature, fiber arts, and music. She had examples of winners from last year either photographs of the winning entry or the entry itself. Any DAR member may enter as long as their item was made while a member. A donation was made in her honor to the DAR Texas Relief Fund.
Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence is eligible for membership.
