The National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Chapter 1191 held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, 14 Aug 2018, at the Sirloin Stockade in Corsicana.
The guest speaker was Jana Lynne Sanchez, Democratic candidate for U. S. Congressional Dist 6. She will face Republican candidate, Ron Wright, in the general election on Nov. 6. Sanchez was accompanied by her Navarro County coordinators, George Proctor Smith and spouse, Marjorie Smith, along with her Ellis County Coordinator, Vicki Spaniel.
Sanchez described her background growing up in Ellis County and attending schools in Maypearl, Midlothian and Waxahachie. Her grandparents were immigrants who settled in Rockett in the 1950s. Her father, one of 27 children, was a Marine and became a US citizen in 1969. Sanchez attended Rice University on multiple scholarships, student loans, work-study jobs and support from family.
After graduation with a degree in political science, she worked as a political fundraiser in California, and managed political campaigns in Alabama before turning to journalism. As a journalist she wrote on food, travel and technology for the Baltimore Sun. Later, she worked as a foreign correspondent for Reuters in Amsterdam. In 2005 she cofounded CitySavvy, a financial and communications consulting firm, before moving back to Texas in 2014.
Sanchez discussed her positions regarding keeping promises to senior citizens concerning retirement, social security and medical care. She proposed increasing the cap on Social Security payments, extending Medicare coverage, and negotiating drug prices. She supports fully funding the Veteran’s Administration as a public entity, and rolling back the tax cuts. The presentation was followed by a question and answer session.
