One of our local candidates stopped by last week to decline an invitation to our annual Candidate Forum.
Last year’s event saw only half of candidates attending who had entered the race for Fairfield City Council.
In order to encourage attendance this year, we offered to release sample questions, via email, a few days before the event.
This candidate preferred to have questions two weeks in advance in order to allow time for research and to request Open Records from the City, as needed.
With all the closures and canceled events due to the corona virus, it appears that all the candidates may get their questions in writing, after all.
City Administrator Nate Smith has asked that Freestone County Times cancel the Candidate Forum in Fairfield that was set for March 31st as this event as a precaution. We expect to do the same with the April 2nd Candidate Forum scheduled in Teague.
Questions will be sent out to our local candidates by the end of this week. Look for articles with their answers sometime in April.
The questions asked will be general in nature, and answers will be limited to allow room to print the responses from each candidate.
Unfortunately, this format will not allow for questions from our readers.
The “Times” has been hosting Candidate Forums in Fairfield for the last four years because we want all our readers to get to know the candidates so they may educate themselves on the issues before casting their vote in May.
We will simply be getting that done a little differently, this year.
