The Fairfield Eagles, following a week off due to a cancellation, battled the Athens Hornets and came up on the short end of a 48-0 score at Eagle Stadium Friday night.
The Eagles will take to the road for the first time this season when the head to Robinson to take on the Rockets.
The difference in classification was noticeable in the matchup with the youth of the Fairfield Eagles on both sides of the ball, however, some bright spots begin to show in the second half with the offense and defense.
Sophomore quarterback Ty Arroyo began the scoring with a touchdown pass to Dre Thompson. The play covered 13 yards and the Hornets took a 7-0 lead. Nathan Sims added an 18-yard touchdown run later in the first quarter and the Hornets were in control 13-0.
The Hornets quick strike offense put another on the board on the first snap of the second quarter. Jecorey Roberts scored on a 30-yard run and the lead extended to 19-0. The Athens offense got many players some numbers on the night and later in the second quarter with Arroyo connecting on a second touchdown pass from 19 yards to Caleb Bennett.
The Eagles hit a rough patch in the final minute of the second quarter. The Hornets special teams unit scored on a 22-yard field goal and then recovered the kick to put the offense back on the field. On the final play of the half, Arroyo weaved through the Eagle defense on a 33-yard touchdown run and the teams went to the locker room with the Hornets leading 36- 0.
With the game well in hand, the Hornets added a pair of scores to close out the game. Sims scored on a 39-yard run and Cedric Love had a spectacular punt return for the final score of the game.
Fairfield was able to move the ball in the second half and played deep into the roster and may have found some young players that will be heard from soon. Fairfield plays at Robinson on Friday.
