Football season is heating up in the Freestone County area. It is a given when the hottest week of the year hits, the football teams take the field. Everyone has high hopes on the season and 2019 is no different.

The Fairfield Eagles return head coach John Bachtel to the sideline, but the school district had several coaches and upper administration reach retirement, so the Fairfield High School building will have some new faces for the 2019-2020 school year.

Fairfield ended their season in 2018 with a loss in the second round to the Gilmer Buckeyes 24-14 after dominating Wills Point 56-19 in the bi-district round. They lost 25 lettermen off the 9-3 Eagles and have some holes to fill in some key spots, returning only four starters on each side of the ball.

The offseason went well for the Eagles with workouts in the weight room and training facilities. According to Coach Bachtel, 46 players made at least 14 workouts during the summer, keeping solid expectations for the 2019 season. He stated their goals remain the same to get better every day and be tough and competitive.

The Eagles will look to several upperclassmen to lead on the field. The offensive line is large and strong with Chandler Noble, Angel Limones, Drew Williams, Brazos Monico anchoring a deep front five. Defensively, they will count on Jar-Mychael Hudson, and Justin Abram to hold the points to a minimum. Zane Anderson, Tyler Haynes and Dylon Rushin return for key snaps on the defensive side of the ball.

As mentioned above, the Eagles have some new faces including Stoney Patton, who is the offensive coordinator and head track coach. Cannon Earp replaces longtime basketball coach Joey Worley and will be on the field for football as well as head golf coach. Philip Page, Taner Tunstall, and Jacob Walthall round out the new coaches that Coach Bachtel is very high on for the upcoming school year. According to match prediction , with there new strategies they can defiantly win the game this time.

The Fairfield Eagles will open on the road for the first two weeks with game in Rusk and Brownsboro. The will return home for the next three weeks with non-district games against Athens and Palestine, who each have new coaches, or one has a new/old coach with Lance Angel returning to Palestine. The Teague Lions have had a good run over the last few years and lost some key personnel to a playoff team that fell to the Troy Trojans 35-21 last season in Mexia. The return to the field in 2019 with a state champion in the district with the Grandview Zebras.

Teague may have lost key players but the return the bruising running back Gelico Green to the Lion backfield. Nemier Herod played multi-positions for the Lions and Travis Lemons anchors the offensive line and he and Ty Abram along with Green will need to be key on the defensive side of the ball. Sophomore Reese Young and tight end Luke Stacks will be some of the players taking key roles for the Lion attack.

The Lions return some of those guys to the lineup, but depth may be a major issue this season. In the scrimmage with Fairfield, the Lions competed play for play until it appeared they got a bit tired and the Eagles had a couple of quick scores. That will be something to watch for the season.

Teague may have another issue and it simply one of the toughest schedules of anyone in Central Texas. They face state finalist Malakoff at home in the opener and then renew their rivalry with Mexia at Blackcat Field on September 6. On September 20, they travel to Lorena to take on a Leopard team that advanced three rounds deep last season. Their final non-district matchup is a long road trip to Hempstead to battle the Bobcats.

The Lions face their third consecutive road game and most challenging matchup in the district opener against defending state champion Grandview who defeated the Lions opening game opponent Malakoff in AT&T Stadium last season. On October 11, the have their first home game since August 30 when the Groesbeck Goats come to Teague, with their new/old coach Jerry Bomar returning to Limestone County. He guided the 1991 Goats to a state championship. Teague alternates home and away games the remainder of the season going to McGregor on October 18, then home against Whitney and their explosive quarterback Devin Wilson. They travel to Maypearl and finish the regular season with a home game against rival West on November 8.

The Teague Lions goal is to make the postseason and it should be a good race to watch as the matchups unfold.
