The Jonathan Hardin Chapter, NSDAR met at the Gibbs Memorial Library in Mexia, Texas for their October meeting. Regent Nancy McSwane, welcomed members and guest.
Regent McSwane welcomed the students chosen DAR Good Citizens (above), their families and school representative. This program recognizes outstanding young people who exhibit the qualities of good citizenship in their home, schools, and communities. The program is open to all high school seniors in Freestone and Limestone counties. The students are then selected with having the following qualities such as dependability, truthfulness, honest and punctuality. The student must also demonstrate service, cooperation, helpfulness, responsibility, leadership and unselfish loyalty to American ideals. This year’s recipients were Jashaughn Hatcher from Fairfield, Ty Stephen Hale from Groesbeck, and Haylee Young from Teague. Each student told of their future goals. Regent McSwane presented each with $50.00, a certificate, and a US Constitution Handbook.
Billie Bournias, Registrar welcomed new member Claudia New of Mexia. Carole Lowe presented the program on Stitching for Children. Any item that can be stitched will be received for silent auction, raffles, or purchase. Mrs. Lowe told during the last administration we donated to Ft Hood USO who received the monies raised for the items. It has been a great success with DAR daughters gathering in their homes to work on crafts. Some of the money purchased books, which the soldiers read the books onto a tape, then sent the book and tape to their child. This next year the money raised will go toward the DAR schools. Mrs. Lowe introduced Pamela Freidman who is also on the committee.
Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence is eligible for membership.
