You would be amazed at the kinds of things people will buy at a garage sale. Items that one person would throw in the trash might be just the thing someone else is looking for.
When gathering items for your next garage sale (Fairfield’s City-wide Garage Sale is Saturday, September 7th), don’t throw out anything.
Furniture (even if it needs repair), power tools, exercise equipment, camping gear and appliances are some of the most popular items. Leftover building materials, and even scraps, could be just want a buyer is looking for to complete a project.
Your old clothes might be considered vintage to someone else. Those that are torn could be cut up to use as quilting squares. Old, tattered T-shirts make great rags. Advertise them as such.
If you really must toss out old clothes, first cut off the buttons and other embellishments. They will be quite a find for those who sew and make crafts.
Tins are another great craft item. Put them aside after using the last of the Altoids, lip balm, or tea leaves.
Unused dishes, coffee mugs, home décor, or picture frames always make for a good buy.
And, for heaven’s sake, be sure to gather up all the toys, comic books and baseball cards. Even the cheapest quality toy may have importance to somebody. It wouldn’t hurt to check out some items on e-bay. You never know when a cheap toy may become an expensive collectable.
If you want to get rid of small appliances, see if you can find the manual or the original container. This will make them easier to sell.
Books are always a popular item, and there are still plenty of folks who watch videos or dvd’s.
Take time to organize as you gather your items. If you fill several boxes with similar stuff, garage sale day set-up will be much easier. Just lay out the tables, then empty each box on one table, and you are instantly organized.
