“It’s all about the kids,” Donna Bennett explains when asked about Camp Shayla.
Camp Shayla is a youth camp tucked right outside Wortham, Texas with super fun events planned year round.
Donna and her husband, Jerry Bennett, started Camp Shayla as a memorial for their daughter, Shayla, who passed away at a young age.
They wanted something for the youth, and realized an arena was a great way to help kids learn while having a blast.
Camp Shayla offers a variety of activities:
–Mutton Bustin’
–Goat Ropin’
–Horse Camp for beginners
–Lawn Mower Races – with a children’s power wheels race and foot race with prizes to be won for the children.
–Various Seasonal Events
Everything is free except the concession stands. Monies raised in the concession stands goes towards scholarships, or the purchase of animals at the Freestone County Fair.
Friday nights are Fun Fridays where the kids can come out, have fun, and learn about running barrels and running poles.
Bennett wants to keep going forward, and has future plans for Friday Night Midnight Rides and Ladies Sorting Classes.
Camp Shayla is also sometimes available for a memorial, with approval.
They have a website, with a schedule of events, at campshayla.com and you can contact Jerry Bennett 903-641-9076 for more information or with any questions.
