Setting up in the parking lot with their phones and laptops, the newspaper men and women of The Capital Gazette made all of us proud as they continued to write and publish the news.
This, in spite of losing five colleagues during a mass shooting in their newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland last week.
“I can tell you this: We are putting out a damn paper tomorrow,” one of their reporters posted on his social media feed.
And, they did. Right on schedule.
Because that is what newspaper folks do.
Our job as a newspaper is to report the happenings of our communities, even when – especially when – that news personally affects us.
I have never been as proud as I was last week to read the stories of how these fellow journalists worked in the face of such a tragedy. They are true heroes.
Newspapers serve their communities every day, informing their readers by seeking out the truth, where ever that leads them.
I encourage everyone to support their local heroes:
–READ your local newspaper,
–become a loyal SUBSCRIBER, and
–utilize their pages to PROMOTE your small businesses and organizations.
We are a better community because of the dedication to truth by newspaper men and women across this great country.
As we celebrate the birth of our nation this Fourth of July, let us also remember our legacy of a free press, and the people who serve – every day – as the watchdog of our communities.
