Freestone County residents will see a $.02 increase on their property taxes bringing the total to $.35947 in order to raise more revenue for the County.

Commissioners adopted a new tax rate, along with the 2018-2019 fiscal year’s budget, at the August 16, 2018 special called meeting.

This will help cover rising costs in almost every area of business, as well as help to pay for the upcoming Capital Murder trial.

Total expected expenditures for the General Fund for 2018-2019 is $9,173,128.00.

During their regularly scheduled meeting, held August 15th, Commissioners took care of the following business:

–The Sunset Advisory Commission, an agency of the Texas Legislature that evaluates state agencies, has recommended the closure of the Freestone County Driver License office. This office is located on the bottom floor of the courthouse and is only open on Wednesdays.

Commissioners have signed a letter to the Sunset Advisory Commission asking that this office remain open, as it is the only Freestone County location.

“We have asked many times that they open the office more than one day a week, but have never been awarded that,” says County Judge Linda Grant. “We hope this letter will explain the importance of having at least one day where our citizens can take care of business without having to leave the county to do so.”

Commissioners are currently awaiting a response.

–Approved the acceptance of a bid from Kent Trucking for contract hauling.

–Approved the selling of five retired Sheriff Office patrol vehicles (Crown Vics)

–Approved the updated list for the Freestone County Child Protective Services Board

–Approved minutes from Aug. 8th meeting, budget transfers and amendments, payment of bills, payroll, and departmental reports

–Decided to leave the burn ban in effect

The next Freestone County Commissioners Court meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. in the County Courtroom, located on the second floor of the courthouse. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
