Traffic was brought to a complete stop for a several hours on Friday, April 24, 2020, around 6:00 p.m. on I-45 southbound near the 203 marker after two 18-wheelers were in an accident.
As per the Department of Public Safeties (DPS) Release, the first 18-wheeler saw an accident ahead and slowed down as it approached.
The second, an International continued without slowing down crashing into the rear of the first 18-wheeler, at the slower speed.
A picture of the accident shows the International tractor completely underneath the other 18-wheeler’s trailer.
The driver of the International, Yampier Espinosa-Marquez, 41, of Houston, died at the scene.
Next of kin have been notified.
No other injuries were reported.
Fairfield, Dew, Teague, Streetman, Wortham and Kirvin Fire Departments all responded to the scene of the accident.
An eyewitness explained that traffic did not move and was not turned around for almost three hours.
It took at least another hour after that for the traffic to move.
After extracting the driver(s) and handling clean up for eleven hours, the first responders were able to leave the scene at 5:00 a.m.
Sergeant Ryan Howard, DPS reminds everyone, “Fully focus on driving. Do not let anything divert your attention, actively scan the road, use your mirrors, and watch out for pedestrians and cyclists.”
