The Fairfield Eagles battled their way into the postseason and found a tough opponent in the first round of the playoffs.
The Little River Academy Bumblebees won the opening game in a 13-0 run rule event at Axtell High School on Wednesday night to get ahead of the impending rain. The Bees played three in the early innings of game two and their pitching made that hold up in a 3-2 series clinching win.
The Wortham Bulldogs also played Wednesday night in Itasca to beat the rain and lost a slugfest 14-13. They jumped out to a 7-1 lead that stretched to 10-3, only to lose the game in walk off fashion on an error in the Bulldog outfield.
With rain in the area, game two, originally scheduled for Wortham, was moved to Riesel. The Bulldogs gave up three in the first and battled back to tie the game at 3-3 at the end of the fifth inning. The Wampus Cats banged out 12 runs in the final two innings to close out the series and the Bulldogs season 15-3.
The oddity of the series was one stat line coming from the Wortham box score. Senior hitter Cash Perez stepped up and hit a home run in his first at bat of the series in game one. He would not see another pitch for the remainer of the series. He was intentionally walked a school record, eight times in two games.
The Mexia Blackcats lost to the Troy Trojans 4-1 on Thursday night at the Waco ISD Veterens Park and the series would go to the Trojans when they shut out the Blackcats 9-0, eliminating them from the playoffs.
