Saving the best for last, Fairfield City Council dispatched several items before welcoming newly elected officials with a Swearing In Ceremony on Tuesday, May 8, 2018.

Taking office are Mayor Kenny Hughes and Councilman Place 1 – James Tyus. Councilman Place 2 – Randy Johnson was re-elected to his position.

TAKING OVER COUNCIL PLACE 1 on Fairfield City Council is James Tyus (pictured at left), sworn in by outgoing mayor, Roy Hill.

The election of Hughes as mayor leaves an opening for Place 5 on the Council. An appointment for that position will be considered at a future date.

Residents interested in serving should contact City Hall, or a member of the council.

In other business:

–Resolution approved in support of Municipal Setting Designation (MSD) for property located at 402 – 418 East Commerce Street, where Family Dollar is currently located. This resolution will allow development of the property to proceed.

–After receiving a positive engineering report, Council voted to postpone decision on financing an Automated Reader System until the newly elected council members were installed.

–A 25-year agreement with the Freestone County Fair Association was approved for signature, contingent on agreed upon changes.

–Budget was amended to increase budget for the Forensic Audit by $3,400 to cover required hotel and travel expenses. According to City Secretary Misty Richardson, the Forensic Audit has been completed and will be presented to Council at a later date.

A Special Called Meeting was being conducted on Tuesday, May 15th as the Freestone County Times was being delivered to newsstands. Items on the agenda include:

–Elect Mayor Pro Tempore

–Recruiting a New City Administrator

–Contractural and other legal issues regarding termination of former City Administrator (closed Executive Session)
