U.S. Rep. Bill Flores announced Wednesday morning, September 4, 2019 that he would not run for reelection in 2020 — making him the fifth Texas Republican to announce his retirement from Congress.
“Serving my country as the Representative of the hardworking Texas families in the 17th Congressional District has been an honor and one of the greatest privileges of my life,” Flores said in a statement.
The congressman plans to spend more time with family and return to the private sector.
The 17th district spans twelve counties, from Bryan-College Station to Waco, and includes Freestone, Leon and Limestone.
Flores joins several other Texas Republicans in Congress who are not running for reelection — U.S. Representatives Kenny Marchant (Dist. 24-Coppell), Pete Olson (Dist. 22-Sugarland), Mike Conaway (Dist. 11-Midlands) and Will Hurd (Dist. 23-Helotes).
At the State level, Texas State Rep. Cody Harris (Dist. 8-R) announced on Monday, September 9, 2019 that he would be seeking re-election.
“While I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished, there’s more to do,” Harris said in a statement.
During a visit to Freestone County in July, Harris emphasized the importance of getting out the Republican vote.
Harris, a business owner and rancher from Anderson County, is completing his first term in the Texas State House.
Texas House District 8 includes Freestone, Anderson, Navarro and Hill counties.
