In honor of Flag Day, Wednesday, June 14, 2023, the VFW Post #5872, along with the Boy Scouts Pack #668, hosted a flag retirement ceremony under the supervision of the Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department.

Members of the community were encouraged to drop of tattered flags to be safely burned during the ceremony.

When the United States flag (Old Glory) becomes worn, torn, faded or badly soiled, it is time to replace it with a new flag, and the old flag should be “retired” with all the dignity and respect befitting our nation’s flag. The traditional method of retirement is to incinerate the flag.

The ceremony is a way to honor the flag as a symbol of our nation.

After incineration, the ashes will be buried.

Attending the last week’s special ceremony were (left-right): Freestone County Sheriff Jeremy Shipley, Dave Bruner, Fairfield City Councilman (Place 4) Roger Keeton, Jr.; VFW Vice Roger Brooke, Post Quartermaster Lamar Evans, Morris Keeton, James Tyus, Post Commander Robbie Robertson, Fairfield Mayor Kenneth Hughes, Don Beene, Firefighter Anthony Roberts, Freestone County Judge Linda Grant, County Commissioner (Pct. 1) Andy Bonner.
