Freestone County Senior Services is looking for volunteers to help with their Meals-On-Wheels program to deliver meals in the Fairfield, Butler, Teague, and Wortham areas.

What is Freestone County Senior Services, you ask?

Senior Services provides congregate meals (eaten at the center) and homebound meals (meals-on-wheels) for senior citizens, 60-years-old or older, who meet the requirements of Area Agency on Aging.

In 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Ike Carden established the first senior center at the Masonic Lodge building on the square in Fairfield. At the time, a garden was planted to provide vegetables for meals to serve local senior citizens.

In 1984, the Freestone County Commissioners Court agreed that the County would oversee Senior Services from that point forward.

The Fairfield Senior Center, located at 201 North Bateman Road, has a garden as well, and offers fresh vegetables for the daily meals, as well as for seniors to take home if they choose. The garden was recently updated by Agrilife Extension Service of Fairfield and members of Fairfield 4-H.

Fairfield Senior Center is the main office for Freestone County Senior Services. There are secondary locations in Butler and Teague as well.

Daily lunch for anyone 60-years-old or older is based on donation. Those younger than 60 may also partake in the meal for a small fee of $7.98. These fees also apply to homebound meals.

Lunch is served at the senior centers beginning at noon; and meals are homecooked by on-site staff.

Meals-On-Wheels is delivered to Butler and Wortham on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and to Fairfield and Teague on Mondays through Fridays.

Serving as Project Director is Stephanie Stephenson (formerly Overall), Administrative Assistant & Meals-on-Wheels Coordinator is Sherry Austin, Butler Center Manager is Goldie Hill, Teague Center Manager is Vonda Brooke, and cooks are Virginia Schoenberg, Daniel Collins, and Darlene Hall. Volunteering in the kitchen on a regular basis is Pam Dechaume.
