A house fire took the life of a Freestone County teen last week, despite the quick response and best efforts of emergency responders.
The call went out on a residential fire with entrapment on Tuesday, September 18, 2018. Fairfield Fire Engine 83 was the first on the scene with fire apparatus, finding a mobile home with fire through the roof.
The 3-man crew stretched in attack lines, entering the structure to knock down fire and conduct a search. They pushed through high heat and flames in the rescue attempt.
Teague Fire Engine 93 crew joined in rescue efforts by attempting to gain access through an exterior wall, which was quickly achieved.
At this point, crews were able to reach and remove the victim, who was deceased.
Also responding to the scene were Wortham Fire Department, Dew Fire Department, Kirvin Fire Department, Butler Fire Department, Fairfield Fire Department, Teague EMS, Fairfield EMS, Freestone County Sheriff Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Parks and Wildlife and Texas State Fire Marshal Office.
“A great amount of effort went into the rescue attempt,” states Fairfield Fire Chief Matt Foree.
Some crew members received minor burns due to extreme heat encountered, however medical treatment wasn’t required.
“A very special mention needs to go to Freestone County Dispatchers,” continues Chief Foree. “These unsung heroes often go forgotten or unrecognized. On this fire this dispatcher did an amazing job.”
“This is the type of call that is tough on everyone,” Foree continues.
Cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Texas State Fire Marshal Office.
Funeral services for Danielle Smith, 19, were held on Sunday, September 23, 2018, at 2:00 p.m.at Bowers Funeral Home in Teague. Interment followed the services at George Cemetery in the Clay Hill community.
