The Fairfield Eagles had a couple of turnovers and allowed the short field all night and China Spring stayed unbeaten on the season.
Fairfield finishes the non-district schedule with a 1-4 record and will take a week off before beginning the District 9-4A Division II portion of the season.
China Spring came in state ranked and they proved why they were ranked high with a 56-point offensive night. They started the scoring with 4:09 remaining in the first quarter when quarterback Cutter Haigood tossed a 25-yard scoring strike to Tyrick James. The point after made the score 7-0.
It did not take long for the Cougars to add to the score. Taking advantage of a defensive stop, Haigood threw his second touchdown pass of the night, this one to Cayden Johnson for a 29-yard score and a 14-0 lead.
The Eagle offense fumbled on the next possession and China Spring only had 41 yards to go for the next score. They did just that when Johnson plunged over for a one-yard score and a 21-0 lead. They would put a final score on the board with just over two minutes to go in the half when James scored on a one-yard run. The touchdown put the score at 28-0.
Fairfield put points on the board before the half on an Erick Rodriguez-Reyes 32 field goal. That cut the lead to 28-3 at the half.
The Eagles scored on the early possessions of the second half when Barlow finished a drive with a one-yard run that would make this a game when the lead shrank to 28-10.
China Spring needed less than minute to get the score back. Haigood found James for the second time on a 24-yard touchdown pass with 6:27 remaining in the third quarter.
Reyes added his second field goal of the night and the score was 35-13. His 28-yard kick was the sixth of the season for Reyes.
Erik Hart scored on a 14 yard run to again answer for the Eagle score. He would a second score with a 12-yard run to extend the lead to 56-13.
Fairfield had the big play left before they would let the game end. With 4:13 remaining in the game, Barlow hit Reyes down the sideline for a 69-yard yard pass and catch. Reyes must have been tired from the score because his point after was no good and the game ended 56-19.
Fairfield will take the week off along with many schools in the area. They will resume play on October 7th when the host the Salado Eagles in the District 9-4A division II opener.
