The Fairfield Eagles split the set of games this week but remain in contention for a playoff spot. Franklin and Crockett are the top two as play continues, and Fairfield and Groesbeck sit in the final two playoff slots as the season begins to wind down.
The Eagles began the week at home at the Johnson Activity Center when the Teague Lions came for a visit. The Eagles jumped to a double-digit lead and pulled away late for a 63-38 win.
Teague took a quick lead with a pair of Jehmel Rice buckets and a 4-0 lead. Kamren Griffin scored and Rex Bean hit a couple of three pointers to take an 8-6 lead and they would hold that lead for the remainder of the game. Rice scored all six points for the Lions in the period but Fairfield scored 11 and led by five after one.
Rice scored off of an offensive rebound and Griffin added on the other end to hold the lead. Dekerione Cunningham found Griffin leading on the break and Bean added a three pointer. Cunningham added another assist pass to Jac’Corey Daniels for a score and he would add a second short jumper. Fairfield added five points to the lead and held a 24-14 lead at the half.
Fairfield got into an offensive groove in the second half and pulled away. Bean scored and put a shot back on an offensive rebound to lead 28-16. Caleb George had a shot and was fouled and he missed the free throw but the offensive rebound by Cunningham found Pierre Allgood for the bucket. Teague would go on a 7-2 run to close out the period but the damage was done and the Eagles held a commanding 43-26 lead with one period to go.
George scored and Jac ‘Corey Griffin added three scores to open a 20-point lead. Allgood and Jy’Ren Canaday hit three pointers to total 20 points in the period. Teague scored 14 points in the period. Rice scored seven of his 26 points but the Eagles closed out a 63-38 win. Bean added 21 points to lead the Eagles and they remained in a solid third place position in the playoff race.
Due to the weather conditions that closed Fairfield Independent School District, the basketball games were moved to Saturday afternoon.
Fairfield travelled to Franklin to take on the district leading Lions. Franklin jumped out to a lead and did not trail after the first period and Franklin took a 78-52 win.
Heyden Helton scored five quick points and Marcus Wade added two from long distance to take the first period 23-10. Bean scored two times in transition but Franklin put the defensive clamps on and took the double-digit lead. Wade and Jayden Johnson hit three pointers and Fragiel Owens hit three shots to maintain the lead. Allgood scored six points in the second but the Lions added four points to their lead and held a 38-21 halftime advantage.
Franklin added to the lead with Malcolm Murphy and Helton scoring quickly. Franklin took advantage of nine Eagle turnovers and won the period 19-12 and had a huge lead heading into the final period.
Bean added a three pointer, his third of the half and fourth of the game and Allgood and George scored late and the Eagles cut three points off the lead but could not get closer than 17 points for the remainder of the contest.
Fairfield and Groesbeck are sill fighting for the final two playoff spots and Fairfield sits a 7-4 in district play with the Goats a game back with a pending game against Buffalo that needed to be made up.
