Visitation was held Sunday with the family present from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Etta passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2016, at the Teague Nursing Home.
She was born in Teague on May 1, 1929 where she lived her entire life.
Etta graduated from Teague High School with the class of 1946; and then married Ray Oakes on December 14, 1953 in her parents’ home in Freestone.
She worked at the Mexia State School as a supervisor until she retired in 1991. Her professional career may have been at Mexia State School, but her true passion in life was her family. She dedicated her life to her family, especially her only daughter Marsha, who was the light of her life.
Etta was one of the most selfless people you would ever meet; she always put others before herself. In addition to the state school, Etta spent a large portion of her time baking for the community; and was known for her famous red velvet cakes.
She loved to play dominoes, cook, watch the Texas Rangers, and do anything associated with her grandchildren.
Etta was always well dressed and her hair had to be exactly right.
She was a lifelong member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church where her father was a deacon.
Etta is survived by her daughter Marsha Skinner & husband Dennis; two grandsons – Chris Skinner & wife Audra, and Clint Skinner & wife Kristin; four great-grandchildren – Austin Skinner, Ally Skinner, Tori Skinner, and Brice Skinner, all of Teague; two nephews – Curtis Smith & wife Cheryl and John K. Smith & wife Brenda, all of Freestone; numerous other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Oakes; her parents – Ovin & Velma Beene; and her sister, Lois Smith.
The family requests Memorials be made to Cedar Creek Baptist Church, 430 F.M. 80 South, Teague, Texas 75860.
