The Groesbeck Goats held a 14-7 halftime lead and shut out the Fairfield Eagles in the second half on their way to a 29-7 win that clinched the runner up spot for the Goats in the playoffs.
Groesbeck took the first possession and needed only three plays to take the lead. Juan Palomo added the extra point for the early 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.
The teams exchanged punts and the Eagles had good field position after a short Groesbeck punt. On the first play of the drive, Jaylyn Daniels took the handoff for a sweep to the left side and then he was off to the races. He scored on a 60-yard run and Jonathon Garcia added the extra point to tie the score at 7-7.
Midway through the second quarter, the Goats put together the go-ahead drive. Lewis completed a pass to Anthony Lewis for a first down and three plays later, Lewis ran up the middle for a 38-yard touchdown run and the 14-7 lead heading into the half.
Fairfield had the first possession of the second half and picked up a couple of first downs. Hayden Braswell had a 15 run for a first down, but the drive stalled, and the Eagles had a short punt, and the Goats took over at the Groesbeck 25. On third and 12 from the 23-yard line, Lewis tossed a pass to Zac Ellison, who had to turn around to catch it and then ran past the Eagle defense for the 77-yard touchdown pass. Lewis ran in the conversion and the Goats extended the lead to 22-7.
The Goats would add a final touchdown on a touchdown run by Zach Wilson and the Goats won the game 29-7.
The Groesbeck Goats finish the season with a 4-1 district record, one game behind district champion Malakoff.
