The Fairfield Eagles split the week in district play and remain in the playoff hunt as the regular season comes to a close. The Eagles currently hold the fourth-place spot on game ahead of the Teague Lions and four games back of the Mexia Blackcats, that sit in third place.
Mexia began quickly with sophomore Kelan Collins scoring on a lay up and a three pointer. Draylon Lee added a three-pointer late in the period to build a lead. Josh George hit a three and newcomer Eli Owens added a pair of scores to keep the game close. Mexia had a 15-10 after the first period.
The Blackcat defense heated up and held the Eagles to five points in the second period. Owens and George hit the only two field goals for the Eagles in the period. Hunter Fitch scored six in the period, including a slam dunk and Caden Grayson added another and the Blackcats led 29-15 at the half.
Mexia exploded on offense in the third period to blow the game open. Collins and Lee scored eight and six respectively at the end of the fast break. Pierre Algood scored eight in the fourth to cut into the lead, but the Blackcats had the game well in hand and took the 68-50 win.
The Eagles travelled to Elkhart to take on the Elks. The Eagles needed a win to remain in the playoff chase, so the game was important.
Chapman scored 21 points in the game to lead all scorers and hit four three-pointers in the second half to try to keep pace with the Eagle offense.
Josh George scored 12 of his team high 14 points in the second half to complete the double-digit win. George led three others in double digits, joined by Owens with 13, Hicks with 12 a Collins with 10. Pierre Algood was just off the pace with nine in the 69-53 win.
Palestine Westwood and Franklin remained tied on top of the District 20-3A at 10-1. Mexia is one game back at 9-2. Fairfield is in the fourth-place spot at 5-6, followed closely by Teague, who finishes the season against Fairfield, Buffalo, and Groesbeck.
