The Fairfield Eagles dropped a pair of games this week but continue to hold on to the final playoff spot in District 20-3A. Palestine Westwood, Mexia and Franklin have the top three spots and Teague and now Groesbeck, along with Fairfield are battling for the final spot.
The Eagles began the week at home and a date with the Groesbeck Goats. The Goats had been trailing the lead pack in the district race but made some noise with an upset win over the Eagles in overtime.
Pierre Algood scored six in the first half and Madden McElroy added eight and the Eagles remained close throughout. Brantley and Medlock hit three pointers to keep the deficit at single digits for the first half and the Eagles led 27-24.
Ray scored eight points in the third period and the Goats made a run at the lead. Manny Brown kept pace with two three pointers to hold onto the lead. Algood scored five in the frame and the Eagles held the game at a 39-39 tie after three.
Five players scored goals for the Goats and five players scored for the Eagles and the total of ten each sent the game into overtime tied at 49-49.
Josh George and Jason Brackens scored in overtime and Kohl Collins hit a pair of free throws, but the Goats remained close with five points from Brantley and a score from Jones. As the time wound down in the first overtime and the Eagles ahead by two, Medlock hit a three pointer from the top of the formation at the buzzer and the Goats shocked the district with their third win of the season and the 57-57 win.
Fairfield travelled to Franklin to take on the Lions and the game was never close. The Lions took a 20-point lead and completed the 67-40 win. LeBouf led all scorers with twenty points in the game.
Westwood lost in Mexia on Tuesday and tightened up the district race at the top. Franklin wins two and remains in third. Groesbeck takes a pair of wins, including another one-point win at home against Teague on Friday and is one game out of the playoff race as the season begins to wind down to a close.
