The Fairfield Eagles fell behind 30-0 at the half and a big second half could not overcome the deficit and the Madisonville Mustangs ran away with a 57-28 win at Eagle Field Friday night.
The Fairfield Eagles (0-3) found themselves in a deficit early when the Madisonville Mustangs (2-1) took the first drive to a touchdown. Jyrin Burns got the Mustangs running with a 44 rip up the sideline to the Fairfield 20-yard line. Three plays later, quarterback Ty Williams passed to Jermal Holland for the 13-yard touchdown and an early 7-0 lead.
The Eagles had a field position advantage when the crossed into Madisonville territory but had to punt to give the Mustangs a long field. Phillip Green had a 27-yard run and Williams threw his second touchdown of the quarter, this one to Lorenzo Johnson for a 41-yard score, completing a 74-yard drive in only four plays. The lead grew to 14-0.
After a field goal early into second quarter, the Eagles fumbled the kickoff and Madisonville resumed their possession at the Fairfield 29-yard line. Holland took the ball on a jet sweep and raced up the near sideline for the score and the Mustangs led 23-0 with only a few minutes gone in the second quarter.
Fairfield mounted a decent first half drive, consuming ten plays and getting as far as the Madisonville 21. Eagle quarterback Cameron Cockerell passed to Rex Bean that covered 32 yards to the Madisonville 35. The Eagles chipped away and had a second and 15 at the Madisonville 26. Cockerell had his pass intercepted by Holland and he weaved his way to a 58-yard return back to the Fairfield 30-yard line. The Mustang offense used solid blocking up front to move into scoring position. Williams scored on a quarterback keeper and the halftime lead was 30-0.
The Eagles took the second half kickoff and marched downfield for a 77-yard drive. Cockerell passed to Jonathon Garcia for a 27-yard gain and then to Bean for 31 to the Madisonville six-yard line. A penalty backed them up and on third down from inside the ten, Braiden Barrett scored on a seven-yard run to put their first points on the board and trailed 30-7.
Madisonville wasted little time and Johnson caught Williams third touchdown covering 54 yards and restored the lead to 44-7.
The Fairfield offense answered on their next possession. Three passing plays put a touchdown up on a 38-yard strike to Camren Daniels. Bean and Garcia caught passes on the drive and the Eagles cut the lead to 44-14.
Fairfield had another good drive from the end of the third quarter into the fourth and reached the red zone. Calyn Wilson caught a pass across the middle for 50 yards inside the Madisonville 20 yard line. Cockerell rushed down for 16 yards and made the effort to hit paydirt but the ball was knocked loose and the Mustangs recovered.
The Mustangs travelled 99 yards to extend the lead. Green took off on a 74-yard run to get most of the necessary yardage and would end with a 19-yard Burns run and the 50-14 lead.
Fairfield needed one play to counter. Cockerell passed over the middle and Garcia out jumped two defenders, taking the ball away and racing up the middle for the 70-yard touchdown.
Burns added a final touchdown and Barrett tacked on a late touchdown run for the Eagles to set the final score at 57-28.
The Fairfield Eagles will travel to Robinson to take on the Rockets in their final non-district game. Game time has been changed to 7:00 p.m.
