The Fairfield Eagles fell behind 28-0 and the Grandview Zebras coasted to a 42-7 win in the bi-district round of the playoffs at Robinson High School on Friday night. Fairfield ends its season at 4-7.
Fairfield punted on the first possession and the kick was held up in a stiff wind and Grandview took over at midfield. Zebra quarterback Kason English hit Carter Collins with a 30 yard gain inside the 20 yard line. Three plays later Casey Cannon scored on an eight yard run for the first score of the contest. The extra point was missed due to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty called on the Zebras following the touchdown and Grandview led 6-0.
The Eagles drove to near midfield in nine plays but Eagle quarterback Cameron Cockerell was intercepted by English. He returned the pick 67 yards for a touchdown and the Zebra defense extended the lead. The extra point was no good and the Zebras held a 12-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Eagles turned the ball over on downs in Grandview territory and the Zebras began a drive that would last eleven plays and move 62 yards. On fourth down from the one, Cannon scored on one yard and J.J. Castillo added the conversion for the 21-0 lead.
The Grandview kickoff caught up in the wind and was short and bounced short of the ten yard mark and rolled behind the Zebra kickoff team and was covered at the 23 yard line. Fairfield reached the Zebra 15 and lost possession on downs.
Grandview needed only one play to turn the field. English faked a handoff and ran the keeper 86 yards for the touchdown and the 28-0 lead adding the conversion.
Fairfield would add points before the end of the half. Braiden Barrett ripped off a 43 yard run into the Grandview end of the field. After an interception was negated by a penalty, the Eagles reached the six yard line. Another interception was called off on a penalty and the Eagles had a first and goal. Cockerell connected with Jonathon Garcia on a two yard touchdown to cut into the lead. Garcia added the point after and the Eagles trailed 28-7 at the half.
English added a touchdown on the first possession of the third quarter and then a 68 yard touchdown run in the fourth to lead 42-7.
Fairfield was the benefit of a couple of fumble recoveries in the fourth quarter but did not convert them into points.
