The Fairfield Eagles lost two game this past week and drop into a last place tie with Mexia halfway through the district schedule.

Fairfield began the week on the road in Madisonville.  The Mustangs began the game with some hot shooting and Fairfield fell behind early.  Kasey Williamson and Sam Bennett combined for five three pointers in the first half of the first quarter.  The Eagles stayed close with a three from Kadarius Walker and short jumpers by Jordan Gibson, but the Eagles trailed 23-11 after one.

The Eagle defense stepped up and they were able to trim some off the deficit.  Kolbe Branch added a pair of threes and scored eight in the period while holding Madisonville to only two of eleven from the field and the lead was cut to 29-23.

Fairfield continued the defensive pressure and took the lead at the end of three periods.  Kolby Adams hit a three pointer and slashed through the defense for a couple of scores and Jaise Oliver hit both of his free throws.  Madisonville shot poorly again, and Fairfield took a 43-42 lead into the fourth period.

The lead was short lived when Williamson hit a three pointer to open the fourth.  The Mustangs hit five consecutive free throws and then they went hot from the field with two short jumpers by Tommy Holiday and threes from Tyrese Brown and Bennett.  The Mustangs went on to claim a 71-57 win.

Fairfield returned to the Johnson Activity Center to take on district leading Athens.   Good shooting from the Hornets put them ahead and they would lead throughout the contest.  Fairfield went 1-18 from behind the three-point line and Gary Lyons and Miles Koehler each had 20 in the 65-55 win.

Fairfield is tied with Mexia for the final playoff spot in District 18-4A.  Palestine and Madisonville each trail unbeaten Athens as the teams go into the second half of district play.

The Eagles have a tough stretch in the upcoming days with a road game in Mexia.  They will be idle Friday and then host Palestine a week from Tuesday.
