The Fairfield Eagles lost both games at the Johnson Activity Center and fell to fourth place in the District 20-3A standings.
Following a loss to Crockett on Tuesday, the Eagles faced the Groesbeck Goats at the JAC in a pivotal district game. Fairfield would fall to the Goats 51-44 with one regular season game remaining, against the Elkhart Elks on the road Tuesday night.
Anthony Lewis took the opening tip and scored in the opening seconds. Rex Bean hit a three pointer for the Eagles to draw to 6-5 and ended the period with a 6-0 run with good shooting off of great passing. Tucker Moore hit Bean cutting to the basket for a score and Dekerione Cunningham dished to Kamren Griffin for a score to end the period.
Pierre Allgood hit a shot and Griffin added a three pointer and the run continued for the Eagles into the second period. Griffin had a steal and score to increase to a 14-0 run and a 19-12 lead. Allen Lewis hit a pair of three pointers and put back to go on a personal 8-0 run to close the gap and give the Goats the lead. The second period ended in a draw and the Goats maintained a slim two-point halftime lead 24-22.
The Eagles got into a rhythm and hit four of their first six shots to open the second half. Griffin, Allgood, Caleb George and Bean with a three pointer in the period to begin to build a lead. Braden Hurt and Lewis scored to get the game back to a close contest but the Eagles took the lead into the fourth period.
Lewis led a barrage of three pointers in the middle of the fourth. Lewis hit three and Tyson Pringle added another and the Goats took control of the game. Timely free throw shooting closed out the time and scoring with a Groesbeck 51-44 win.
Franklin and Crockett have solidified the top two spots and Groesbeck put themselves in solid third position. Fairfield will clinch the fourth spot with a win on the road in Elkhart Tuesday night and Groesbeck finishes the regular season with a home game against Teague.
