The Fairfield Eagles scored 32 points in the third period to break open a close game and defeated the Groesbeck Goats on the road Wednesday night.
The game was moved back a day to accommodate the inclement earlier in the week, but the Eagles held a strong place in the playoff race going into the contest.
Kohl Collins scored early, and Madden McElroy tossed in a three pointer and the Eagles took an early 8-0 lead. Groesbeck answered with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to two with Cannon Campbell scoring to tighten the game’s score. Davion Hicks hit the offense glass six times and scored six points, and the Eagles ended the period with a 7-0 run to take a 15-6 lead at the end of one period.
Airen Roberts scored five quick points to open the second period and put some distance in the game. Groesbeck scored on four straight possessions to close the gap but only hit one of their final seven shots of the period. Willaim Zachary and Eli Owen had scores in the last minute the Eagles maintained a 30-23 at the half.
The Fairfield Eagles heated up from long distance in the latter moments of the third period and blew the game open. Brown hit three consecutive three pointers and four total for the period and Roberts added his second tray for the game. Fairfield scored 32 during the eight-minute period and led 62-39.
Fairfield ended the game with nine free throws in a row and hit three of their final four shots from the field and held a double-digit lead for the 75-54 win.
Fairfield holds onto third place in the District 20-3A race behind the Mexia Blackcats and Palestine Westwood Panthers. Fairfield will travel to Mexia to take on the Blackcats Tuesday night.
