The Fairfield Eagles continued to work toward a higher seed in the playoffs with a convincing 96-46 win over the Elkhart Elks at the Johnson Activity Center on Tuesday night.
The Eagles remain one game back of the Franklin Lions in District 20-3A and will host the Lions on Tuesday night in a pivotal game in the district standings.
Fairfield began the game by hitting their first seven shots from the field and jumping out to a 16-3 lead. Freshman Pierre Allgood hit a three pointer and Tyler Smith scored three fast break baskets. Babar Muhammad hit a three pointer and Rex Bean scored on two short jumpers for a season high 31 points in the first quarter for the 31-10 lead.
The Eagles hit their first three shots of the second period, including another three pointer from Allgood. The went on a stretch where they hit six of eight, with another three transition scores from Smith. They would finish the first half hitting 24 of the 37 attempts for their best shooting percentage for the half for this season. Fairfield led Elkhart 57-24 heading into intermission.
The hot shooting continued going into the second half and the Elks committed ten turnovers that created easy baskets for the Eagles. Smith broke away for three more in transition and Rex Bean and Dekerione Cunningham each had a three pointer and the Eagles added to the lead and had a commanding 79-32 lead.
The final eight minutes saw many of the reserves seeing action in the Eagle lineup. Zimmerman hit a three pointer and Avery Peterson hit a late basket to close out the scoring. Fairfield won the game with a season high 96 points and allowed the Elks only 46.
Fairfield remains behind by one game to the Franklin Lions, who won big over the Buffalo Bison.
Fairfield will take on Franklin at the Johnson Activity Center on Tuesday night.
The Fairfield Lady Eagles dominated the Elkhart Lady Elks 89-3 and in the two district games, only allowed seven points total. They hold the district lead by one game over the Franklin Lady Lions and will host them on Tuesday night. Only a few games remain before the Lady Eagles begin defense of their state title from last year.
