The month of December saw many activities that wrapped up the old year, and the staff is busy planning the new one. In January, we were pleased to accept a donation of the book of Sonny Sessions’ writings from the Freestone County Historical Commission, represented by Brad and Diane Pullin (at left). The book was compiled by Linda Mullen (President of the Freestone Historical Museum Board) as a fund raiser to renovate the old jail that is located at the museum. We are proud to have this in our Genealogy Collection and thankful to the historical commission for the donation.

Another aspect of Freestone history of interest to our community is the initial availability of past issues of The Fairfield Recorder and Teague Chronicle newspapers. Access to the historical news is at Portal to Texas https://texashistory.unt.edu/ (search for Fairfield Recorder or Teague Chronicle). You may also get to the Portal to Texas from the library web site https://www.fairfieldtxlibrary.org/genealogy.

We are also proud to be associated with this year’s Citizen of the Year Award for 2018, Tammy Garazewski, given to her at the Fairfield 2019 Chamber of Commerce Banquet on January 24. Tammy serves as the Vice-President of the Fairfield Library Association Board, and was a main force behind the library renovation in 2017 as well as many other contributions to our community. Congratulations Tammy.

In February there are two special events scheduled, the first being the third class on Excel, scheduled on Tuesday, February 19, at 5:30 (please call the library and reserve your seat and computer). The second, with more detail below, is a book sale.

The Friends of the Fairfield Library met for their first meeting of 2019 to plan activities to raise awareness of the library in the community and help with fund raising efforts for the various programs. The first planned fund raiser that the Friends will hold is the book sale on Thursday, February 28 from noon to 7 p.m. and Friday, March 1 during regular library hours (9:30 am to 5:30 pm). Suggested minimum donations are $1 for hardback and 25-50 cents for paperbacks. The library will be open during the extended hours on Thursday evening for regular library patrons to use all our resources.

Any popular subscription mazazines, such as Field and Streams, Popular Photography etc. are being requested by Director Gary Wiggins. If you are like most of us and have stacks of last month’s issues, please consider donating them to our reading area. Any magazine, once read by you and your family, can be brought to us so that the community can read them also. This will save the library money in magazine subscription costs while providing material to our patrons.

Planning is underway for the Summer Reading program, and more information will be provided in the next few months. We also would like for everyone to know that the FLA Annual Public meeting will be in March. Additional information will be published later.

Finally don’t forget to check out the Fairfield Library page (Facebook.com/FairfieldTXLibrary) every week for fun-filled photos of the weekly Story Time, and also visit our website at https://www.fairfieldtxlibrary.org/ for additional information and latest updates.
