Got extra cash lying around? You might!
Check with the Texas Comptroller’s Unclaimed Property Site.
Property abandoned for more than a year is considered unclaimed, and The State of Texas requires businesses and government entities to report all unclaimed property to the Comptroller’s office once a year.
Unclaimed property can be an assortment of things, such as:
–abandoned bank accounts
–uncashed checks
–overpayments
–payroll and vendor checks
–unredeemed gift cards
–insurance proceeds
–dividends
–mineral interests
All you do is go online to claimittexas.org, and put your name in to search. It will pull up a list of everything held in your name and similar names.
You click the button that says ‘CLAIM’ if you believe it is yours, and then click ‘View Claimed Properties’.
On the next page there is a drop down menu with various options from being a government entity to a legal heir. Select the proper one, and continue.
Texas has worked hard to make it easy for its citizens to claim their abandoned and forgotten money.
