Disc Golf is coming to Fairfield, Texas, and should be ready for players by late spring 2020.

Next week there will be a groundbreaking at the fairgrounds between the Basketball Court and the Playground.

Come out on Monday, March 9, 2020 at 4:00 p.m., as there is going to be a lot going on that day.

PDGA Pro Landon Knight will be running a disc golf clinic at the event, and Hole 1 will be ready to play for the first time.

There will be merchandise and prizes, and generally a lot of fun for everyone who attends.

This project has had many fingerprints on it, from Mayor Kenneth Hughes to Director of Public Works Clyde Wood and many other people according to Fairfield Disc Golf Association (DGA) founding member, Pastor Andrew Weitner.

Andrew and family moved to Fairfield, Texas two and a half years ago when he became the Pastor of New Life Church. You may know him as the saxophone playing Fireman for the Fairfield Fire Department.

He enjoyed Disc Golf in Dallas, Texas, and saw the potential for a rather nice course in Fairfield, Texas.

While there are no concrete dates yet, DGA will be holding at least two tournaments a year, as per their contract.

This year will start with a beginner level event for those interested in starting out, and a competitive level tournament to help build into larger tournaments in the future.

The course layout sets a fun challenge for players, and makes use of the previously unused land inside the Park.

In addition, the course layout is arranged to allow players access to nine holes without interference during major events, like the annual Freestone County Fair.

Included in the course are familiar locations, such as hole 16 were the disc will sail over the pond and hole 18 that makes use of the old baseball backstop near the show arena.

In fact, hole 18 is a rather important hole. Not only will it be a difficult shot, but it will also host a large banner with rules and information, plus any ads that businesses chose to include.

The ability to buy supplies locally is in the works, but not fully ironed out at the time of press.

Disc Golf is a game for any age. If you can throw a disc (aka, Frisbee®) and get around, you can play disc golf.
