The Tooth Fairy may soon start seeing a dip in her collections, but Dr. Justin Wright, DDS, said he doesn’t think she’ll mind. That’s because Wright recently joined forces with the Tooth Bank, a national dental stem cell solutions company, to give parents an affordable opportunity to harvest and store vitally-important dental stem cells that have the ability to regenerate into various cell types.
“Many parents hear about (umbilical) cord blood banking as a way to provide their children with the best possible medical care in the face of an unanticipated disease or illness. This process is not only costly, but is also often the last thing on a parent’s mind as they’re welcoming a child into the world,” Wright said. “Tooth banking gives parents a second, and much more affordable, opportunity to harvest the highly-regenerative stem cells from their child’s baby and wisdom teeth.”
While the initial cost of cord blood banking ranges from $2,000 to $3,000, plus an average of $100 annual storage fees, the Tooth Bank charges $590 to extract, examine, freeze and store the dental stem cells from multiple teeth. Additionally, yearly storage fees cost $115, all paid to Tooth Bank.

The kit is then overnighted to the Tooth Bank lab where the dental stem cells are processed and collected before being cryogenically preserved. A detailed report from the Tooth Bank, which includes a unique storage identification number and what to do in the event the cells are needed in the future, is sent to the patient’s parents.
