Dear Editor,
My earlier Letter to the Editor appears to have troubled a Buffalo reader, per last week’s response from him; so, I hope here to clarify my diction.
Words quite often have different meanings depending on who the speaker/writer is: e.g. one man’s patriot can be another man’s traitor.
Resistance fighter for an anti-communist regime is called counterrevolutionary by Chinese authorities. A pro-American irregular fighter, we call guerilla; enemy forces call him terrorist.
Webster’s dictionary is a place to go for spelling information, not for knowledge. WOKEISM today does not remotely mean “awareness of one’s surroundings.” It defines a political/social movement opposed to the traditional American values of work, family, duty, religion, individualism and initiative, striving for equal opportunity instead of “equity”, merit instead of quotas or set-asides, true freedom of speech instead of cancel culture, personal responsibility instead of entitlements. It is inherently un-American. This then, is what WOKE means, and I suspect that the Buffalo reader actually understands this word as well as I do.
I stand by my previous statement: A “woke” American patriot is the ultimate oxymoron.
