Recently, around 2:30 p.m., my wife and I were rear ended by a car with an Uber sign in the window. When I got out to trade information, the woman driving did not have an insurance card but assured me she was honest and had insurance with a Galveston agent. I tried calling The Teague Police but only got an answering machine that said call the County Sheriff or 911 if an emergency. Not having the Sheriff dept. number, I called 911 but could not hear the response due to the noise of traffic on 84. Shortly 911 called back and my wife, sitting in the car, heard it over the car speakers and told the operator I was trying to get the police and we didn’t have a 911 emergency. Meanwhile I was getting flags on my cell that call was not sent.
I soon gave up trying to contact the police and with the phone numbers and info I had we left the scene with $1,500 damages. In the confusion I forget to take a picture of her driver’s license. As one might already know, the info was phony so I went to the Sheriff’s office a couple of days later thinking I would file an accident report and possibly a complaint thinking I might get them to look up the registration to see who owned the vehicle. Through the security window I was given an accident report form that required the better part of a half hour to complete in my lap. When I completed all the numbers for my car I took it back to the window and was told no, that was for my insurance company. Immediately I wondered why my insurance company would need it if there was to be no record of it. There was nothing they would do I was told.
There just has to be a better way. Where do you call if you just need a policeman? Is 911 the go to for all police matters? Most of us were taught it was for emergencies only. If anyone sees a black car with an UBER sign, assume it has no insurance.
