Dear Editor,

You’ve heard the expression “rose-colored glasses?” Well, that was the effect the interview with Nate Smith, the new City Administrator had. In fact had I not known better, I might have rushed out to obtain unnecessary debt and move on in. (Oh, I forgot. We can’t move right on in. We have to do thousands and thousands of expensive renovation first.)
I was especially interested in the statement of Mr. Smith’s that we have an “exclusive” on the property. Do you know that that means? Nobody else wants it.
The asbestos I mentioned in my last letter turns out to be in a building the city will not be using. Why are we buying something we won’t use? But the kicker was when Nate told me the heating and cooling and other utilities of ‘Telephone Titanic” will be nearly the same as the bills for our present day City Hall. Anyone who believes that has definitely fallen off the turnip truck.
Nate explained the drainage issue was being seen to and City Hall would be inspected. The results of all this information would be made available to the public so we could see what’s what. They’ve just been busy getting all their ducks in a row.
That’s all well and good and should already have been done. I just know that a few weeks ago they were ready to vote that night except the room filled with people, many of whom had much to say. I figure what they’ll do now is wait until after the May ballot and then vote on this, fearing anyone who votes for it will not be reelected.
In closing, I am curious about two things: which council members are so excited about this possible move (?) and just what did he mean when he told me I could forget about any civic minded citizens donating land for the new City Hall? Does he mean we have no civic minded citizens of that the council would refuse any donation?
