One Last Attempt at Illumination
Dear Editor,
I do not attempt to “convert” anyone, not even a misguided “progressive” with my position papers. To try that would be a waste of my time/energy, seeing as how such minds appear impervious to reason. My differences with Mr. Harrison in Buffalo are not remotely semantic; they are political/social. Our issue is not about how static dictionaries define words. I know that strictly speaking, woke means awareness of surroundings. That said, however, there are multiple things to be aware of other than social or racial injustice.
Any thinking person is cognizant of both in the world and in the U.S. However, I submit that nowhere else in the entire world have citizens of color risen so far and achieved so much as here in America. This obvious truth seems brushed aside in leftist rhetoric and “progressive” dogma that sees primarily a nation of Oppressors and Oppressed. This is the prism through which their socialist poison is seen, swallowed, and accepted by the very young, the gullible, and the slow-witted. This perpetuates an underclass of “victims” dependent on government hand-outs [entitlements] that continues generation after generation.
Ultra-left radicals who preach Critical Race Theory (just one example) absolutely DO preach concepts diametrically opposed to traditional American values. I will again name some here: work, honor, patriotism, family, individual responsibility, duty, self-reliance…just to name a few. I referred to those radicals as woke in my last Letter to the Editor. I hold that they are anything but aware of reality today.
To address Mr. Harrison’s point: yes, words do have meanings, but over time and demographic change, meanings can acquire different shades of meaning: e.g., communist dictatorships name their nations democratic republics when they are neither. Current usage of gay as an adjective is universally understood as homosexual, not happy or cheerful. And importantly, woke is most popularly understood as radically leftist, contrary to our historical American values, unfair in its treatment of dissent, and inherently un-American.
I stand by my statements earlier: wokeism is a bacillus infecting society, corrosive to the Constitution, and subversive to all that America stands for. I pray that it will excised from our body politic soon. Again, a “woke” progressive patriot is oxymoronic!
God bless America!
