Dear Editor,
General Winfield Scott (U.S. Army) was a veteran of the War (1812), the Mexican War (1848), and initial stages of the Civil War (1861-65). After Robert E. Lee had declined President Lincoln’s offer to command the Union Army and then resigned his commission, Lincoln recalled Scott to active duty. Upon reporting for duty, it was apparent that the old general was not up to the task: too fat and old to even mount a horse, a necessity at the time. He was quietly retired from government service.
We are rapidly approaching a point in time, sadly similar in its gravity to those days. Unless situations change dramatically — and they can — American voters will likely choose a Chief Executive Officer to lead us as our president through 2028. The two current front-runners are Messrs. Biden and Trump. A more stark comparison is impossible to imagine.
Mr. Trump is plainly no high-powered executive officer, capable of making critical decisions. He is a very loose cannon, has little grasp of international affairs, promotes a cult of personality, shoots from the hip instead of from the head, fires the best qualified staff (e.g., Rex Tillerson, CEO of Halliburton as Sec. of State). He is a strong man but not wise. A default choice at best for President.
Mr. Biden’s deficiencies are of a different kind. He is very plainly, visibly every day, too old for the presidency even now. His cognitive skills are too sad to list: he cannot even follow a teleprompter. His handlers won’t allow him to debate Trump for fear of his meltdown. Added to that is the very real possibility of corruption. His wealth doubtless results not from his salaries as senator and president [see Hunter Biden’s financial web].
I am old myself (86); I understand age and its limitations. I can remember the day when Franklin Roosevelt died; I cannot remember what I ate for dinner last night. For this and other factors, I retired a few years ago . . . just like General Winfield Scott. Mr. Biden should also go home, count his incredible pensions, and leave government to the future. God give us viable candidates, and
God bless America!
