The Freestone County Jail is currently understaffed, with three having resigned and one resigning this month, according to Sheriff Don Anderson.
The County Jail is currently still open, indicates Jail Administrator L.J. McAdams.
While the facility is still in operation, the shortage of staff could necessitate transporting current and incoming inmates to other facilities, temporarily.
“We have already hired replacements,” says Sheriff Anderson.
Background check results are pending, and the new employees should be in place soon.
“With a $2,500 deductible on health insurance and a $250 deductible on prescription, they couldn’t afford to stay and left for better insurance,” says Sheriff Anderson.
One of the recently departing jailers agreed that higher pay and benefits, as well as a less stressful work environment, influenced their decision to resign.
The former employee also points to deplorable living and working conditions in the jail, including possible asbestos in the flooring insulation; and moldy ceilings caused by 20 or more leaks in the jail roof.
