The Jonathan Hardin Chapter, NSDAR met on November 14, 2018 at Gibbs Memorial Library in Mexia, Texas.
Chapter Regent Nancy McSwane called the meeting to order and welcomed our State Vice Regent, Marcy Carter- Lovick and other guest.
Regent McSwane introduced the winner of the Christopher Columbus Essay contest, Hannah DeFriend an 11th grade student from Groesbeck High School. NSDAR along with the National Italian American Foundation sponsor an essay contest for students, grades 9-12, on Christopher Columbus.
The subject for this year was “Comparing Ship Technology: The Ships Columbus Used Versus the Ships of Today.”
The American History Essay Contest Winners were introduced by Regent McSwane. These students were from grades 5-8 and their topic was “The Women’s Suffrage Campaign”. This campaign led to the 19 Amendment giving women the right to vote and hold office.
The winners were Andrew Lawrence, 5th grade from Groesbeck Intermediate School; River Champion, 6th grade Groesbeck Intermediate School; Vanessa Hernandez, 7th grade Dew ISD; and Rene Lehman, 8th grade Dew ISD.
All contest winners in American History and Christopher Columbus read their winning essays.
A report was given on a soldier being laid to rest in Thornton. Capt. Richard W. Podell had been missing in action since 1967. Capt. Podell was returned home with full military honors including a C-130 fly over. He along with 9 other crew members were in a C-130 aircraft when it was shot down, there were no survivors.
Marcy Carter-Lovick, State Vice Regent and a member of the Elizabeth Crocket Society, gave a very interesting and informative program on the DNA testing service in dayton oh. She explained the major categories, and the three types of DNA testing. DAR will accept some DNA but with other documentation.
On Wednesday December 5, 2018 the chapter will honor our Veterans from Limestone and Freestone counties.
