When going for cancer treatment, a person should be able to have a hamburger for lunch, not need to bring peanut butter and crackers, explains Bettye Trask with the Freestone Cancer Support Group (FCSG).

With parking at MD Anderson being up to $30.00 per day, and other associated fees just to get to where treatment is received, many patients face having to decide what is more important: A filling meal, or the ability to park and receive treatment.

Enter FCSG and their many donors who assist patients of Freestone County with travel expenses, so they can deal with everything that goes hand-in-hand with seeking treatment for cancer.

These monies help to lessen the burden of traveling for treatment, and maybe bring some light into a person’s life during dark days.

One recipient who was making daily trips to Dallas to receive treatment and returning home every day as she is her husband’s caregiver asked how long did she have to pay this back?

FCSG was able to tell her that this is not something you have to pay back, ever.

That ability is because of the amazing people involved in FCSG and their generous donors.

The Bryan BT Thornton Musical Scholarship donated their leftover money to the Limestone and Freestone Cancer Support Groups.

Michelle Welch and the FHS Beta Club held a Pink Out this past school year, bringing in $1500 for the cause.

When the Junior High campus was closed due to quarantine, $500 in leftover fundraiser monies was donated to FCSG.

Trask talks about how, “We are blessed to live in our community and our country.”

Their annual Spring Style Show was canceled due to COVID-19, but the community did not stop the donations.

April and May have seen over $3,000 each in donations, with that money going back out and into the hands of those who need the most help.

Looking forward, there are hopes of having a Fall Style Show currently planned for September 29, 2020 at Twisted Vines Event Center.

The Style Show’s are not just a fundraiser, but they are an event for cancer survivors. It, “gives them a boost,” and a chance to share experiences with each other.

Trask also made mention of how, “More and more counties are doing what we are doing.”
