The Wortham Bulldogs tallied less than 50 yards of total offense and minimal first downs in a 47-0 loss to the Leon Cougars. It was the first road trip for the Bulldogs in the young season and the final tune-up before beginning district play in two weeks.

Leon kept the Bulldog offense in check the entire night. They held Wortham to negative yardage and zero first downs in the first half. Wortham had some good plays on defense holding the Cougars off the scoreboard a couple of times in the first half.

The Cougars took the first possession and were forced to punt. They forced a Bulldog punt and the short kick set the Cougars up in Bulldog territory. A pair of Cotton Brigner runs, the second for a two-yard touchdown put the Cougars ahead for good. The Gavin Whyte extra point was good, and Leon led 7-0 with just three minutes gone in the first quarter.

Wortham had to punt again in the first quarter and quarterback Landon Thomas broke loose on a 44-yard run and Brigner took care of the rest with a 31-yard score. The extra point kick was no good and the Cougar lead grew to 13-0 and the quarter would end with that score.

The Bulldog defense got off the field on a third and long and the punt pinned the Bulldog offense at their own ten-yard line. The drive stalled and the punt team came onto the field. The punt was blocked and covered by the Cougar return team at the Wortham eight-yard line. Leon needed only three plays to punch in the score on a Matthew Lin one yard run and the 19-0 lead when the point after was no good.

A Wortham interception set the Cougars deep in Wortham territory, this time the 12. Thomas quickly found Josh Wilson for the 12-yard touchdown and the extra point built the lead to 26-0. Leon would add one more score before the halftime break on a 40-yard connection from Cooper Stevens to Wyatt Moore for the 33-0 halftime lead.

Leon would add two more scores in the third quarter, a Brigner 67-yard touchdown run and a Parker Thomas three-yard score.

The Bulldog offense did have a spark in the fourth quarter. Kross Montgomery came in at quarterback for relief and he completed a pass to Tyler Langley that covered 23 yards inside the Cougar 25. Two plays later, the Cougar defense intercepted the pass, ending the threat and the game with a 47-0 Cougar victory.

The Wortham Bulldogs (0-3) will head to the open date and then begin district play with a road trip to Frost to take on the Polar Bears in the District 10-2A Division II opener.
