Teague Graduate, Samuel Ielati, saved the life of his two-year-old brother, thanks to a mandatory CPR class he had taken seven days prior.
On Thursday, May 28, 2020, a call came in through 911 dispatch that a two-year-old child had drowned, and was unresponsive, pulse less, and not breathing.
When Teague Hospital District (THD) EMS arrived they found a child who was awake and breathing, albeit confused.
Samuel was home, where the drowning occurred, with two other graduates, and able to begin CPR immediately, which saved the boy’s life.
Paxton was taken by EMS to Children’s Hospital in Dallas where he showed zero signs of any neurological or physical problems, and is 100% recovered.
CPR and Stop the Bleed classes are held annually at Teague High School by THD EMS and Parkview Hospital Staff in accordance with a law passed in 2013 requiring all graduating seniors in Texas to learn CPR.
Having missed the original class due to being ill that day, he made up his day at the EMS station, just seven days prior to the accident.
CPR absolutely saves lives, and this goes to show the importance for students to learn this skill before they graduate.
The City of Teague honored Samuel for his heroic deed during the Board of Alderman meeting held Monday, June 15, 2020.
Congratulations to Samuel Ielati from everyone at The ‘Times’ for your valiant act in saving your brother’s life. Your community is proud of you!
