Funeral services for Arthur J. (A.J.) Lewis, 76, will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at 11:00 a.m., at Bowers Funeral Home in Teague. Bro. Carl Clark will officiate. Interment will follow the services at Dew Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Friday with the family present from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Lewis passed away peacefully at his home in Lanely with his grandsons, Scooter and William, by his side.
He was born at home in Waldo, Arkansas, on July 7, 1943. A.J. grew up in Arkansas and quit school in the 9th grade to help his father on the farm. He married Ann Cobb on July 27, 1961, and shared over fifty-eight years of marriage together. They made their home in Dallas and he owned and operated A.J. Excavating in Lancaster for several years as well as owning a few gas station stores and a mowing business. Mr. Lewis bought some acreage in Lanely in 1979 and used it primarily as deer hunting property until his retirement in 2008 when he moved to his ranch. He loved Blue Grass music and helped create the Plum Creek Blue Grass Festival. A. J. also enjoyed John Deere tractors, raising watermelons, and living the farm life.
He was survived by his wife, Ann L. Lewis; one son, Arthur J. Lewis, Jr.; one daughter, Tammy D. Wright & husband George William, Jr., all of Lanely; five grandchildren, Scooter Wright, Jonathan Lewis & fiancé Sydney Alexander, Jacob Lewis & Ashleah Shaw, Nikki Wright, and William Wright; two great-grandchildren, Arayley Kay Wright and Brooklyn Danielle Lewis; one sister, Laverne Bolton & husband Terry of Magnolia Arkansas; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by one daughter, Susie Lewis; his parents, Frank & Alta Belle Lewis; two brothers, Robert Lewis and Joe Lewis; and two sisters, Nelle Lewis and Ivy Lewis, and one granddaughter, Brittany Wright.
